"I
love to see Steven and Christopher's face when I appear at the door
of their classroom. They light up! Then they run to the door with a
smile on their faces. At times like those I know I'm making a
difference." --from
one of our America Reads' tutors
America Reads at UNC Charlotte tutors
hosted a Read-In at the University City Public Library
on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008.
The America Reads
at UNC Charlotte program is an extension of the College of
Education’s commitment to students, teachers and families in
Charlotte, NC and surrounding communities. UNC Charlotte students,
who are trained by faculty from the Department of Reading &
Elementary Education, tutor students in area elementary and middle
schools. Tutors are paid from Federal Work-Study funds which helps
them pay for tuition, books and living expenses.
America Reads tutors work with elementary and middle-level students
on a range of literacy skills including reading and writing. Tutors
typically work one-on-one with students to improve reading
comprehension, fluency, decoding, and writing skills.
We at UNC Charlotte are committed to the success of the America
Reads Challenge. We provide:
Initial
training for tutors
Ongoing
support and training as well as onsite help when needed
Communication
with school partners with a goal of providing consistent and
relevant support for students
