Benefits of being an America Reads Tutor

First, as an America Reads tutor, you can make a difference in the lives of students in our community. Think about that! You could be sitting at a desk, but, no, you decide to help elementary students become more proficient readers. Second, you earn money towards you education. Here is what you can earn as an America Reads tutor:

  • $10.00/hour for the first semester of the first year

  • $11.00/hour after the first semester of the first year

  • $12.00/hour during your second year

  • $13.00/hour during your third year

  • $14.00/hour in the fourth year

  • $1.00/hour extra for America Reads student leaders

Becoming an America Reads Tutor

All America Reads tutors are enrolled in the Federal Work Study program. To find out if you qualify for this program, contact the student employment coordinator:

Scheduled Tutor Meetings

UNC Charlotte's America Reads tutors meet regularly during the academic year for ongoing training and support. All tutors are required to attend meetings every other week.

Our Spring 2008 schedule for meetings is every other Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tutors are required to attend one of these meetings:

  • Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, March 14 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, March 28 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, April 11 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

  • Friday, April 25 at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.

Initial Training Dates for Spring 2008

All first year tutors must attend one training. These trainings are held in the conference room next to the Department of Reading and Elementary Education (COED 367):

  • Friday, Jan. 18 from 1 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Friday, Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon

  • Friday, Feb. 1 from 1 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Friday, Feb. 8 from 1 to 4:00 p.m.

Tutor Drop-in Program Sites

In order to help tutors earn as much of their Work Study award as possible, we have some tutoring sites that allow our tutors to drop in to help students with reading and homework. Currently, the following sites allow tutors to stop in to help students. Please note days and times--there is no need to call ahead:

David Cox Road Elementary School
