Mnemonics

Mnemonics are methods or systems for aiding the memory. A mnemonics system can be used again and again to help remember different sets of material. Mnemonic strategies can be grouped according to the following characteristics: organization/association, visualization/mental imagery, and rehearsal (Bos & Vaughn, 1988), Organizing and associating information with other information is an effective method for remembering it. Visualization or mental imagery refers to the practice of mentally picturing what is to be remembered. Rehearsal is the method of saying aloud or to yourself the information you are trying to remember. Although mnemonics systems have been in use for more than 2,000 years, almost all of the experimental research has been conducted in the last 20 years. Students with learning problems often experience difficulties remembering directions, simple facts, and other information important to success in school. Mnemonics are effective strategies for improving the memory of these students.
