Precision Teaching

Precision teaching is a set of measurement procedures to be used when teaching any content or material. It is based on continuous measurement of a student's progress and may be used for motivation, feedback, assessment, and instructional decision making. Although precision teaching is used to change both affective and cognitive behaviors, the procedures for changing cognitive behaviors are emphasized in the present discussion.
For cognitive behaviors, precision teaching involves assessing the student to determine the skills for instruction; setting goals or aims; charting the student;s performance on the skills to develop learning pictures; teaching the skills for accuracy, fluency, and maintenance; and evaluating the instructional procedures. Each procedure involves a set of rules for the teacher to follow. For example, rules for designing the assessment tool tell the teacher how to select the skill, how to write the test items, how to administer the assessment, how to count the items, and assess problems.
