The International Studies School at Garinger

The International Studies School at Garinger High School in Charlotte, NC. The Center began working with ISS in the Fall 2008 on curriculum planning as well as teacher professional development on teaching methods to engage and support diverse learners. Currently, the Center has worked with ISS to create a Professional Learning Community for teachers to explore issues of need at the school. Click here to see the PLC's blog.

During the Fall 2008, the Center  worked with students at the International Studies School at Garinger to use digital technologies to create a video expose about the school titled, Garinger: Perception vs. Reality.

We got the idea for our exposé while studying Jacob Riis. He was an investigative journalist also known as a “muckraker”. His book “How the Other Half Lives” takes a look into the lives of immigrants who came to America. It gave people insight into these people’s lives. After looking at images from his book, our class decided to make a video of our own to show the perceptions and realities of life at Garinger High School and the surrounding community. (From the video, "Garinger: Perception vs. Reality." )
