An introduction to Java and object-oriented programming is offered in light of the College Board's AP Computer Science program switch from C++ to Java/OOP in 2003-04. The course covers the material and the AP Java subset required for the AP Computer Science A-Level exam. We will study Java classes and objects, constructors and method, interfaces, inheritance and polymorphism. Participants will learn to program Java applets and applications through case studies and Java. Prerequisite: knowledge of C++ syntax and control statements.

This workshop will present some of the best tools and techniques for helping students acquire the skills needed to excel in the AP classroom, with special emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills. Throughout the week participants will discuss the 2007 Language Exam format, AP strategies, ways for preparing students for the test, how to incorporate culture and literature in language classes, how to find and use authentic materials, how to integrate skills and use them in class and for the exam. Participants will review AP teacher materials that include course outlines, content-related handouts, student samples, scoring guidelines, and commentary for recently released AP exam free-response questions.
