The SITE Program The North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) has instituted a major new series of one-week summer institutes for mathematics and science teachers, coordinated with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and focused on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. These courses address mathematics and science content knowledge in conjunction with appropriate and tested pedagogical and assessment strategies to help North Carolina teachers deliver the best mathematics and science to the students of North Carolina. These courses were designed using the latest research on delivering interesting, effective professional development for teachers in a manner that will help them deliver interesting and effective mathematics and science lessons to their students. Additionally, these courses were designed to focus on themes and issues that traverse the North Carolina Standard Course of Study so that teachers will be ready to address the core competencies effectively in their classes. It is the mission of the NC-MSEN to improve the quality of mathematics and science teaching and learning in the schools of North Carolina by providing statewide leadership in mathematics and science professional development in an effort to strengthen the quality and increase the size of the teaching base in mathematics and science education; and increase the pool of students who graduate from North Carolina high schools prepared to pursue careers requiring mathematics and science.
