Summer Institutes for Teaching Excellence (SITE)

NC-MSEN SITE 3-5 Science

June 16 - 20, 2008

(5 days during the summer and 4 follow-up Academic days)
8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Location: Smith's Academy
(6.0 Renewal Credits)

This 9-day institute (five days in the summer and four days during the 08-09 school year.) will focus on the four major science themes that cut across the NC Science Standard Course of Study for Grades 3-5. It will emphasize science content, and it will also model science pedagogy. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the authentic integration of literacy, mathematics, and technology. Assessment in science and managing science materials also will be included in this institute. The institute themes include: Rock Cycle (soil properties, composition/uses of rocks and minerals, & landforms); Ecology (plant growth and adaptations, animal behavior and adaptations, & interdependence of plants and animals); Energy/Forces (light, heat, magnetism and electricity, & forces and motion); Weather and Climate (wind direction & speed, precipitation, cloud cover, air pressure, weather patterns, influence of geography on weather).


Instructor: Dr. Sarah Ramsey, UNC Charlotte
Target: 3 - 5 Grade Teachers
Fee: $400 for the nine days of instruction.
