Field Botany

June 16-26, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: UNC Charlotte Greenhouse & Field Trips
(3 Graduate or 6.0 Renewal Credits)

This course will address some of the specific topics listed in the middle and high school component of the SCS document including (a) Competency Goal 1 – understanding and conducting scientific inquiry; (b) Competency Goal 3 – understanding evolution and biotechnology of plants; and (c) Competency Goal 4 – understanding form and function of vascular plants; learning to identify them using keys; and investigating co-evolution by studying pollination biology. Class members will utilize the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens where we will conduct field studies on pollination biology, practice plant identification, and utilize greenhouse plants. There will be as much outdoor activity as the weather will allow, as well as classroom discussions. There will be one long day field trip to the NC mountains.
