Suggested Books
for Use with
Advanced Functions and Modeling

Not everyone will become a mathematician, but everyone needs to understand and apply mathematics in real life.

This list is a list of books suggested by members of the committee that helped develop the Advanced Functions and Modeling course.  Many of these books were not submitted by the publishers to the State for adoption in the course.

1.      Mathematics: Modeling Our World, Book 4.  COMAP (Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications),   Website

2.      Mathematical Models with Applications.  COMAP (Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications), 2002, hardcover, 607 pp., ISBN 0-7167-4458-9  Website

From the publisher’s website: This is a true modeling course, asking students to explore relevant contemporary issues such as the drug testing of athletes and the effect of climate changes on the economy. Students will learn to use mathematical models as tools for understanding mathematical concepts and to solve real-world problems. Designed as an alternative to Algebra 2, students will find topics interesting and relevant to their daily lives.

3.      Functions Modeling Change Precalculus, High School Version, 2nd Edition. Connally, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al., (2nd edition).  John Wiley Publishers.
This book is on the state adoption list for Precalculus.  The trainers for the Advanced Functions and Modeling course feel that this book meets the spirit of what the Advanced Functions and Modeling course should be about.  If choosing a book from the state adoption list, the Trainers feel that this will be the best choice.

4.      Contemporary Precalculus.  NC School of Science and Mathematics.

This may be a bit too high for the particular students we are trying to address.

The textbook adopted by the State Textbook Adoption Committee is Algebra and Trigonometry by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson.  While a good book, this book is a traditional Algebra II book with trigonometry and does not meet the spirit and the intended focus of the Advanced Functions and Modeling course.

Modules prepared by the trainers will have links to homework assignments in both the Functions Modeling Change and the Algebra and Trigonometry books.
