Dexter Hybrids
These are photographs of hybrid rhododendrons developed by Charles Owen Dexter of Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA. These
hybrids tend to do well in the Middle South and here around Charlotte, NC.
Photographs here were gathered from around the web to give the largest possible
exposure to all of the Dexter hybrids. There are several large collections
and expositions of Dexter hybrids on the web: (1) the William Bartram
chapter has a page(s) of photographs taken in their gardens; (2) John and Sally
Perkins of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society have a
marvelous collection of photos of gardens, rhododendrons, azaleas, etc,
including specifically a collection of Dexter hybrids;
Other Hybrids
Amy: this has one of the best cone shaped trusses around. Often wins prizes in the flower show if it is in bloom at that time.
Anna Rose Whitney: a huge rose colored flower with large trusses.
Calsap: white with a prominent blotch.
Consolini's Windmill, named for Tony Consolini caretaker at the Dexter estates
Graf Zepplin
Herbie: a peachy, yellow hybrid named after the founder of the van Landingham Glen, Dr. Herbert Hechenbleikner.
Lem's Monarch: a huge truss from the West Coast that does surprisingly well here.
Llenroc: an early bloomer developed at Cornell (Imagine that!)
Maxecat: a Joe Gable hybrid that does extremely well in the South.
Mrs. E.C. Stirling: a stirring pink
Paul Mauney - named by Don Kellam. Here is a second picture.
Purple Lace - it really is purple, this is a poor picture.
Rocket
Ruby Bowman: blooming early here in Charlotte
Summer Summit, a David Leach hybrid.
Tiana: a beautiful hybrid with flowers that last and last!
Vivacious: a brilliant red.
Species Rhododendrons Grown in van Landingham Glen
R. catawbiense - the Catawba rhododendron, native to the mountains of the Appalachians. Roan Mountain derives its name from the display of these flowers in late spring. (Picture from The Rhododendron Page). This link is a picture of Greybeard Mountain framed by
R. catawbiense. (From North Carolina Scenic Calendar 1994, picture by George Humphries)
R. maximum - the Rosebay rhododendron, or giant laurel, native to the mountains of the Appalachians. Normally found at the lower elevations while
R. catawbiense occurs at the higher elevations.
The van Landingham Glen on the
UNC Charlotte campus is a 7.5 acre garden with hundreds, if not thousands, of
rhododendrons and native azaleas. Many were gathered through the work by
Drs. Hechenbleikner and Mellichamp who have made the garden into the showplace
it is today.
Deciduous Azaleas
Native Azaleas and Rhododendrons
Non-Native Azaleas and Rhododendrons
- Rhododendron impeditum - a small purplish-blue rhododendron that will stand our heat for a while, though many succumb to it eventually.
It is a good plant to buy if you want to see how fast our heat will kill a plant
- even one given good care.
-
Rhododendron hyperythrum -
This one seems to thrive in the heat of the Carolinas. Even I can't kill
it.
-
Rhododendron pseudochrysanthum -
Another species of lepidote rhododendron that seems to love our weather.
Grows well in Charlotte.
-
Rhododendron
degronianum spp yakushimanum
-
Different forms behave differently in Charlotte. Heat does not seem to be
a problem, but some cultivars and hybrids have the great desire to get leggy.
-
Rhododendron makinoi -
Another species that I have killed several. Other members of the local ARS
chapter can grow it, though.
