What is an ePortfolio? |
|
 |
The ePortfolio is
designed to help candidates satisfy the technology knowledge and application
requirements necessary to be licensed to teach in North
Carolina. Those requirements are known as NETS-T (National Educational
Technology Standards for Teachers) or North Carolina Technology
Standards for Teachers.
The ePortfolio is a digital
portfolio that contains artifacts (electronic products) produced by the
candidate while in the teacher education program. The ePortfolio is designed to
promote the integration of theory and knowledge into practice, to link required
course work to professional standards and to improve the candidate’s
technological proficiencies.
Candidates are given web space for collection and storage of materials from
their courses and field experiences.
Please refer to the
Privacy Notice
which outlines information that cannot be on your web site.

Who is required to produce an ePortfolio? |
|
 |
Every candidate admitted to the Teacher Education Program
on or after August 1, 2003 must complete an ePortfolio to demonstrate proficiency with
technology and to showcase work leading to his or her initial licensure
as a teacher.
This includes candidates enrolled in:
(a) elementary education
(b) middle grades education
(c) secondary education
(d)
K-12 arts education
(e) special education
(f) child and family development
Candidates who were admitted to teacher education
on or before July 31, 2003 will continue with the
Technology Passport and are not required to create an ePortfolio.
|
How can I learn to create my ePortfolio? |
|
 |
Every teacher
education program within the College of Education has a course or
workshop where candidates learn how to create their ePortfolio. When
candidates take this instructional design and technology application
course (EIST 4100, MDSK 3151, MDSK 6162, ELED 3110, etc.) or one of the
special workshops that are offered on the ePortfolio process, the
ePortfolio components will be introduced. This course is usually one of
the first courses candidates take after admission to teacher education.
Candidates who are not taking
a technology course or producing the required artifacts as a regular part of
their job or courses will be able to independently complete the ten required
technology activities to fulfill the NETS-T requirements.
Candidates may also come to
COED 003 & 009 open computer labs during staff hours to receive help from the
ePortfolio Student Coordinator. Contact information and lab hours can be found
on the ePortfolio website opening page.
|
Where do I create my ePortfolio? |
|
 |
The technology
portfolio you will produce can be web-based or created as a
Portable ePortfolio (PeP for short). Candidates who take EIST 4100,
EIST 5100, ELED 3110 or MDSK 3151 will begin a web-based ePortfolio as a
part of the course. The ePortfolio contains a series of activities
which have been designed to help showcase your technology skills and
validate that you meet North Carolina licensure requirements. Some of
the tasks required will be a part of your student teaching or graduate
internship. Others are designed to acquaint you with technology
applications, resources, uses and the law. Classes complete activities
assigned by the instructor. Candidates who are not required to take one
of the technology integration courses will have access to activities to
complete independently. Candidates who are currently teaching can
substitute actual artifacts created as a part of his or her teaching
experience. Requirements for the ePortfolio are the same for all
candidates whether the web-based or portable ePortfolio version is
selected for completion.
|
What will be my World Wide Web address? |
|
 |
Each
candidate at UNC-Charlotte
is provided space for a webpage. Web page addresses for the
candidates who create web-based ePortfolio will use the following format.
http://webpages.uncc.edu/~your
login name
|
What must be included in the ePortfolio? |
|
 |
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The ePortfolio requirements have been streamlined as of August 1, 2005.
Within the ePortfolio, teacher education candidates will only include
the items necessary to show that NETS-T (National Educational Technology
Standards for Teachers) expectations have been met. All teacher candidates are
required to demonstrate mastery of NETS-T standards prior to being recommended
for a North Carolina teaching license.
All versions of the
ePortfolio templates are acceptable. Students who currently have
more items included in their portfolios than are now required do not need to
remove them. Any previous technology matrix is
acceptable, but the newer version based solely on the NETS-T matches
the current requirements.
Candidates who wish to substitute
the new matrix within your ePortfolio will find a replacement copy of this new
matrix at:
http://education.uncc.edu/eportfolio/NETS-T_matrix.htm
The following is an outline of the Common Components that must be included in
every candidate's ePortfolio. This list serves as the baseline (minimum
accepted) for all portfolios. Please refer to the
Privacy Notice when making decisions
concerning information to include.
All ePortfolios must be reviewed 1) prior to beginning student teaching or
graduate internship and 2) prior to being recommended for licensure. Please
refer to the
NETS-T Competencies Verification
Matrix for
additional information. All ePortfolio requirements must be complete before a
candidate can be recommended by the UNC Charlotte College of Education for his
or her initial teaching license.
All ePortfolios will include:
1.
Home Page:
Contains a welcome message from you or a quote you like. Also insert either a
piece of clip art or a photograph (of the candidate or another favorite
photograph). This is also called the “Index.”
2.
About Me:
General introduction including information and pictures you would like to share
- such as family, hobbies, interests, favorites, etc. as chosen for inclusion by
you. Please refer to the
Privacy Notice when making decisions concerning information to
include. In addition, the following files must be hyperlinked to this page.
3.
Professional Standards:
Hyperlinks to almost all
standards that apply to your program of study (COED Conceptual
Framework, COED Diversity Commitment, INTASC Standards, North Carolina
Technology Standards for Teachers, North Carolina Educators Code of Ethics, and
North Carolina Educators Code of Professional Practice) have been created for
you. Please read them carefully. You must also hyperlink to the program
specific standards or professional organization website for your course of
study.
4.
Clinical Experiences: 1)
Complete one table for each of your clinical experiences. Please change the
color and size of the font for each of the demographic descriptors that apply to
each school where you were placed for a clinical experience. This log will
highlight your work with diverse student populations, at diverse locations and
the length of each clinical. 2) Hyperlink the name of each school to the
school's website. 3) Also include a description of the technology use you
observed at each school. Note how you could apply what you learned about the use
of technology (a) to make sure that the diversity of all students is affirmed
and (b) to assure that all students have equitable access to and safely
use technology.
5.
Work Samples:
As work samples
are completed, please add the product to your ePortfolio and hyperlink to the
appropriate descriptor on the Work Samples page.
-
Sample Lesson
Plan: At least one lesson plan from the student teaching/graduate
internship instructional unit must be included. This lesson must have been
implemented with students and must include student use of technology.
-
Samples of
Student Data and Evidence of Impact on Student Learning from Instructional
Unit:
Data must be kept on students during your student teaching or
graduate internship experience. (Please refer to
Privacy Notice).
In addition, you must prepare an analysis of the data using appropriate
technology such as spreadsheets and graphs to show your impact on student
learning. This assignment should be included in your portfolio. The inclusion of student work products is optional, but the work can
be scanned into the web page as long as no identifying information is
included.
-
Technology
Projects/Activities: Technology projects/activities are usually a
part of the technology integration courses offered by programs (e.g.
EIST 4100, EIST 5100, ELED 3110 or MDSK 3151). For
students who are not enrolled in one of the technology integration courses, a
set of technology projects, which can be completed independently, is
available. Substitution of authentic items from actual classroom teaching is
allowed as long as the substituted artifact meets the outlined requirements.
The following activities are available for candidates, each includes
instructions:
Activity 1: Using technology with diverse learners
Activity 2: Locating websites for classroom use
Activity 3: Evaluating websites for classroom use
Activity 4: Presenting Multimedia Presentation
Activity 5: Creating a Digital Grade Book
Activity 6: Understanding social, legal, ethical issues
of technology
Activity 7: Creating a parent/classroom newsletter
Activity 8: Reflecting on the use of technology in education
6.
Matrix of National Educational
Technology Standards for Teachers:
The last task to demonstrate your technology competence is to hyperlink products
you have included in the ePortfolio to the appropriate cell within the NETS-T
matrix. These products demonstrate that you have met the North Carolina
Technology Standards for Teachers.

What template do I use for my ePortfolio? |
|
 |
It depends on when
you were admitted to
the
Teacher Education Program.
Candidates who were admitted
to the Teacher Education Program on or after August 1, 2003
are required to produce an ePortfolio.
All candidates who began or
will begin his or her ePortfolio after August 1, 2003
should use the guidelines contained in this web site.
An ePortfolio template has been created for you. Candidates
will add work to this template to make it their website.
Candidates who are creating a web-based ePortfolio will house
their ePortfolio and all related materials on the UNCC server on
his or her “H” drive.
Candidates who are creating a Portable ePortfolio (PeP) will
house their website on their computers at home and the website
will not actually be “live” on the internet. The portable
ePortfolio will need to be copied to a CD each time it needs to
be turned in.
Candidates choosing to complete a portable ePortfolio are
encouraged to use a portable USB drive to work on and store the
finished product.
The name of both ePortfolios (web-based and portable) should
remain “public.html”. The finished product can later be
transferred to web space at UNCC or on to a personal web site to
make it “live.”
Although each web page has been begun for you, you must add to
each page to make it fit you and your program. All technology
work is to be your own.
