Guidelines for Content/Skill-based Lesson

EDUC 6254 Individualizing Instruction for Diverse Learners

 

For this assignment you will need to select a lesson that you have either already taught or plan to teach in the future. Your task for this assignment is to revise the unit to include specific modifications and strategies for differentiating instruction for diverse student learners. Your final written product should be typed, double-spaced, using APA style guidelines and of professional quality.  Your finished product should include the following sections:

 

1.                   An overview of the lesson. Your final written product should begin with a thorough description of your lesson. Your overview should also respond to the following questions: What connection, if any, exists among your unit/lesson and the state and/or district performance standards? How will you monitor students’ progress?  What are your desired student outcomes at the conclusion of this unit/lesson?  How does this unit/lesson respond to various social and cognitive developmental levels of students?  How does this lesson/unit integrate knowledge from other content areas?

2.                   A section specifically addressing individualizing/modifying the unit/lesson.  The second section of your final written product should include specific ways to individualize particular aspects of the lesson in response to student’s needs. This section should include a brief description of any child/youth for which you added modifications. Be very descriptive and reflective in this section. Your narrative should reflect your thinking in making the modification decisions you have chosen; what was your rationale? And, what are the predicted benefits of these modifications for the student? Other words, why did you choose the modifications that you have chosen?

3.                   A section specifically addressing ways to differentiate the unit/lesson. This section of your written product should include various ways to differentiate the lessons within a unit. Like the second section of this assignment, you will need to provide a rationale for your selection of a differentiating strategy and a description of the benefits of this lesson or lessons to individual learners.

4.                   A section that identifies the ways you have addressed multi-culturalism within your lesson. This section of your written report should specifically address each component of your lesson in terms of its’ inclusiveness, exclusiveness, and transformation level. In your narrative explain the elements of your lesson that make it inclusive, exclusive, and/or transformative. Also address how you plan to proceed with any further revisions to the lesson in the future.

5.                   Your reflections.  Have you taught this unit?  Do you plan to teach this unit in the near future?  If you have taught it – What were some of the best aspects of the unit?  What were some aspects that need improvement?  Does the unit respond to diverse needs of learners?  If you have not taught this lesson, do you perceive any aspects of the lesson that you will pay particular attention to?  If so, why?
