Lateral Entry at UNC Charlotte
The
Lateral Entry Teacher Initiative has been combined with the College of
Education’s “Pathway
to Teaching” – a new initiative to help mid-career changers and
retiring professionals become teachers. The University of North Carolina
at Charlotte College of Education has redesigned our educational
programs to meet the licensure needs of lateral entry teachers as well
as those seeking a career change to teaching. Through these combined
initiatives, UNC Charlotte continues to respond to the severe teacher
shortage in North Carolina.
The
areas of greatest need include middle grades, math and science and
special education. There are opportunities in many other teaching
professions as well, including early childhood education (prior to
kindergarten), elementary education, foreign languages, fine and
performing arts, history and English as a second language. Many school
systems allow professionals to start teaching while they pursue a
teaching license. School systems across the country are looking for
motivated individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
UNC
Charlotte offers a flexible curriculum leading to either a graduate
certificate in teaching or a master of arts in teaching. With a
bachelor’s degree, you can get started!
You
can earn a graduate certificate in just 18-27 semester hours of
coursework (based on the licensure area) or a master’s in 39 semester
hours. Most courses are taught in the evenings, some are taught
online. In summers, courses are held on-campus, online and off-campus.
By combining traditional campus instruction, evening and summer classes,
and online courses, UNC Charlotte reaches out to all – including you.
