Summer Leadership Institute (Summer 2008)

Theme: Environmental Activism

The Literacy for Democracy Summer Leadership Institute is a summer program of UNC Charlotte in which teacher education students enrolled in designated courses learn to facilitate a one week camp for rising 4th through 9th graders. The goal of the Summer Leadership Institute is to:

  • Build tomorrow’s leaders through civic engagement
  • Empower students to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others—become AGENTS for change
  • Meet students at their educational point of need and provide support to help them grow as readers and writers
  • Provide technology rich learning experiences

The theme of the Summer Leadership Institute is “People Who Make a Difference: Becoming AGENTS for Change.” The Summer Leadership Institute will prepare teacher education students at UNC Charlotte to integrate service learning and civic engagement into literacy and learning. Students in grades 4-6 and grades 7-9 will read, write, serve and speak out on current issues that relate to the local, national and global communities. Participants in the Summer Leadership Institute through reading literature and non-fictional sources will learn about the common attributes and actions of people who have made a difference in the lives of others and who have empowered others to give voice to the voiceless.
