Project MORE: Progress Report
May 2003
- Boyd
Davis and Lisa
Russell-Pinson met with Lloyd Wimberley, Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at CMS; also in attendance
were Kathy Meads, Director of Second Languages, and
Jennifer Pearsall,
Second Language Resource Teacher. Dr. Davis and Dr. Russell-Pinson
introduced Dr. Wimberley to Project MORE and gave him many
project-developed materials; Dr. Wimberley expressed interest in the
professional development opportunities sponsored by the project and would
like to schedule another meeting to discuss the project. Dr. Meads and
Ms. Pearsall agreed to draw up an action plan to publicize Project MORE’s
activities.
- Following
the meeting with Dr. Wimberley, Dr. Davis and Dr. Russell-Pinson spoke
with Dr. Meads and Ms. Pearsall about some future initiatives of the
project, including providing mini-grants to CMS teachers and schools.
They will meet in June to further discuss these plans.
- We will
be holding a repeat of the technology in-service on June 17th.
To register, please send an email to Dr. Russell-Pinson at
projectm@email.uncc.edu to reserve a seat. Please include your
name, position and school in the body
of the message.
-
Yuangshan Chuang
completed supervising the collection of interviews in multiple varieties
of Chinese this month. We are excited to have narratives in Cantonese,
Mandarin and Taiwanese and are grateful to Dr. Chuang for his spearheading
this part of our collection.
- We would also like to
thank Blair Rudes for donating close to 100 interviews that his
class collected to the project. Dr. Rudes’ contribution has now increased
the holdings of Charlotte Narrative and Conversation Collection to over
800 interviews.
- Caroline Linse,
co-writer of the grant and consultant for Project MORE, will be staying in
Minsk, Belarus for a third year on her Fulbright and has decided not to
return to UNC-Charlotte. We wish Dr. Linse all the best with her future
plans.
- We are pleased to
welcome Grayson Midulla, Project MORE intern for May and June, and
Crystal Sherrod, a new transcriber. At the same time, we say
goodbye to Dena Teeter McFadden, Bill Dennis and Ian
Brailsford. We wish them well in their future endeavors.
Lisa Russell-Pinson,
Project Manager
