Project MORE: Progress Report

September  2002

  • Project MORE co-sponsored, with the TESL program at UNC-Charlotte, a panel discussion entitled “Assessment and English Language Learners:  Perspectives from around the world”.  Fran Hoch of the NC Department of Public Instruction addressed the new state policy for assessing English language learners and the implications of the national “No Child Left Behind” legislation; Guenter Nold of the University of Dormund (Germany) discussed DESI, the national German-English pupil performance initiative; Yuangshan Chuang of the National Kaohsiung Normal University (ROC) spoke about the web-based National English Proficiency Test being developed by Taiwan.  An enthusiastic crowd of approximately 100 people attended the talk and the reception.  We thank Theresa Perez for her help in making this event an overwhelming success!

  • This month, Boyd Davis visited the following middle schools to get feedback from teachers:  Carmel, Eastway, Martin, McClintock and Sedgefield.  We are grateful for the interest in and support of Project MORE among the administration and teachers of these and other schools in CMS.

  • John Gretes, Dane Hughes and Bill Dennis are working to improve the database structure and querying functions for the narratives and activities.  Dr. Gretes has also been instrumental in the redesign of the website.

  • Boyd Davis and Lisa Russell-Pinson made two presentations about Project MORE this month.  They presented “Developing Mainstream Teachers’ Cultural Competence:  Project MORE” at the annual meeting of Southeastern TESOL in Atlanta, GA and, with Sabrina Hafer (Director of the International Center at CMS), “Project MORE:  An introduction to newcomer narratives” at the National Educators of Newcomers Conference in Washington, DC.

  • On behalf of the project, Blair Rudes and Lisa Russell-Pinson will be attending the First Summit on English Language Acquisition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, in November.  First Lady Laura Bush and Education Secretary Rod Paige are scheduled to speak.

  • Finally, we welcome Ian Brailsford and Donna Leiter, two new research assistants, and Yarah Mansour, who is completing an internship in Spanish translation, to the Project MORE team.
