Children are naturally attracted toward a box of sand. They experiment with the sand— push it, move it, feel it, mount it, pour it, dump it, get in it, build in it, and create in it. It is natural, then, to have a sandbox as another tool in the play therapy room. using sand trays in therapy is being rediscovered in the United States. This workshop introduces professionals to this insightful and effective tool for children, adults, family and group psychotherapy. This workshop will focus on the creation of the “world” of the client and a significant role of the witness in the play therapy room through — the history and rationale for use , principles and the underlying foundations of sand tray therapies, comparison of theoretical foundations in century therapies, stages of sand tray models, use of materials needed for sand play, facilitation of the sand tray session, and using sand tray material in conjunction with other play therapy methods.
Instructor
Elaine Wittmann, MAEd, NCLPC, NCC, RPT-S, ACS, first found art is a powerful clinical tool, then play therapy that offered the potential for insight and movement, and finally the power of sand in figures in the sacred space of the tray. She discovered this sand tray process, about 20 years ago at workshops with Gisela DeDomenio. She continued to learn, experience, and appreciate the depths and heights of this powerful intervention for herself, and with clients, students, and those she supervises. Elaine presented workshops on the sand tray process at international conferences, state conferences across the United States, classes at universities, and is a frequent presenter in the Southeast. Elaine is in private practice in the mountains of North Carolina, Rainbows End Retreat and Training Center, where she trains clinicians in the use of play therapy including sand tray therapies, provides supervision, facilitates private process, and sees children and families |
