Dr.
Shawnee Wakeman
is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education and
Child Development at UNC
Charlotte. Her research interest includes the relationship of the principal to
the education of students with disabilities, access to the general curriculum
and how it is enacted for students with significant cognitive disabilities, alternate assessment, and alignment of the
educational system and the policy implications for students with significant
cognitive disabilities. She has served as a special education teacher, a middle school
assistant principal, a research assistant and research associate on several Office of Special Education
Program grants, and an adjunct professor of special education and educational
research courses. Dr. Wakeman is currently involved in several publications
related to accessing the general curriculum for students with disabilities,
policy implications of legislative initiatives for students with significant
cognitive disabilities, and alignment of alternate assessments.
