North Carolina Teaching License:
Renewal, Change and Conversion Processes
Listed below are the Instructions for faculty and staff
members who wish to renew a North Carolina license, to report name charges, to
change social security numbers, or to convert from another state to North
Carolina.
License Renewal:
1. Complete Form U (attached).
2. Form E (postsecondary experience) will be completed for you.
3. Attach a check for $55.00, payable to the North Carolina Department of
Public
Instruction (NCDPI).
4. Attach the credit renewal form (attached).
5. Forward completed packet and check to the Teacher Education, Advising, and Licensure Office
(TEAL).
Name Change and/or Social Security Number Change (if not in
conjunction with renewal):
1. Complete Form U (attached).
2. Attach a check for $30.00, payable to the North Carolina Department of
Public
Instruction (NCDPI).
3. Attach a copy of the court order for a name change or a copy of the social
security card for number changes. Name changes from marriage do not
require
official documentation.
4. Forward completed form, copies (if required), and check to TEAL.
Convert from Another State to North Carolina Teaching
License: (Please request packet from TEAL.)
1. Form A
2. Form N (if you had public school teaching experience in NC)
3. Transcripts from all schools attended
4. Licenses held in other states
5. Praxis scores
6. Form E (for verification of public school teaching in other states)
7. Attach a check for $85 payable to NCDPI.
8. Forward completed forms, copies, and check to TEAL.

North Carolina Teaching License: Renewal Activities
Faculty members who teach methods courses, staff members, and
others who wish to be licensed by the North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction (NCDPI) may renew their license(s) through activities fisted below
For accreditation purposes, methods faculties are required to hold current
licenses in the areas they teach
Full-time faculty and staff members must earn a minimum of 15
units from at least four activity areas, 3 of which must be in technology.
Part-time faculty members must earn a minimum of 15 units
from at least two activity areas, 3 of which must be in technology.
ACTIVITY UNITS OF CREDIT
Teaching 1.0 annually
Technology 3.0 for the cycle REQUIRED
New course development 1.0 annually
Major course revision .5 annually
Presenting a paper 1.0 per paper
Making a presentation .5 per presentation
Taking formal course work 1.5 per semester hour
Workshop attendance .5 per hour
Conducting workshops (related to teaching field) 1.0 per contact hour
Travel (formal proposal to Chair and Dean needed) varies
Article (related to teaching field) 1.0 per article
Monograph (related to teaching field) 1.0 per monograph
Book (related to teaching field) 3.0 per book
Write, submit, & obtain funding for a grant or contract 1.5 per
grant/contract
Other creative works & products (e.g. teacher evaluation varies
instrument)
Activities qualifying for renewal credit will be reviewed
periodically by the Teacher Education, Advising, and Licensure Office (TEAL) In conjunction
with the Chairs and Directors Additionally, faculty and staff members, under
special circumstances, petition these groups for additional units of renewal
credit.
Faculty and staff members are responsible for providing a
summary analysis and supporting documentation for all activities to be
considered for renewal credit A Me for each faculty and staff member is
maintained in TEAL. TEAL will be responsible for maintaining credits, reporting
credits annually to individuals. soliciting credit reports, and filing license
renewal recommendations to NCDPI
