
Overview:
The M.Ed. program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) qualifies
graduates who already hold an "A" level
teaching license for add-on K-12 licensure to teach English as a second
language. In addition to experienced teachers, students in this program also
include persons who are not interested in K-12 licensure, but who want to work
with non-native English speakers in community colleges, public and private
agencies, and multinational corporations.
Program Objectives:
As prospective teachers of English as a second language, graduates of the
program are prepared to:
possess instructional skills that enable them to
teach in diverse settings;
adapt lessons for language minority students; thus,
increasing their access to and participation in the total curriculum;
identify and implement curriculum theories and practices relevant
to human development and learning;
be well grounded in current trends and research in English as a Second Language, and be able to conduct action research;
and acquire the leadership skills to share their knowledge of ESL instruction with mainstream teachers and other professionals.
Admission Requirements
a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university
an overall 2.75 GPA in undergraduate work
a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Millers Analogies Test (MAT)
a statement of purpose
strong letters of recommendation (3)
an A license in an appropriate field (if seeking a teaching license)
at least two years of teaching experience are strongly recommended (if seeking a teaching license)
Additional Admission
Requirements for Foreign Students:
In addition to the general requirements for
admission to the Graduate School:
applicants who desire to earn an add-on K-12 license to teach children for whom
English is not their native language must hold an "A" level teaching license from the North Carolina Department of
Public Instruction (or its equivalent from another state).
applicants from countries where English is not the primary language must score at least 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and at least 220 on the computer-based TOEFL.
