SPED 6691 - Seminar in Professional Development and Leadership Instructor of Record: Dr. Wendy M. Wood |
|||
|
2 |
COURSE DESCRIPTION - Special Education teachers are required to gain greater insights and skills in evaluating their own and student performance, and designing and conducting research projects in their classrooms and schools. Teachers are expected to use the latest technology for their own learning, for more effective instruction, and for communication with others. This course provides the necessary support for students to plan and synthesize their learning in relationship to all five program goals. The 3-course sequence offers one of several means for students to fulfill two guidelines set forth by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction; one focuses on the learning process and evaluation of learning, and the other focuses on the expectation of conducting classroom research. This latter guideline, pertaining to classroom research, is also part of the standards for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educators. (SPED 6691 must be repeated for a total of 3 credit hours.) | |||

CAPSTONE PROJECT
-
The Master's
capstone project is designed to
challenge you to integrate your newly acquired knowledge and skills into one final
project. Prior to 2000, Master's students took comprehensive examinations as
their capstone (or culminating) experience. The Master's Research and Portfolio Projects
are designed to provide a richer and more authentic experience to integrate and apply the
aggregate of knowledge and skills from your Master's course work.
To successfully complete your Capstone Project, it will be necessary for you to demonstrate behaviors characteristic of three important professional qualities: INITIATIVE, INDEPENDENCE, and SCHOLARSHIP. INITIATIVE - the ability to start and follow through with a plan of action or task (Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary). INDEPENDENCE - being self-reliant. SCHOLARSHIP - approaching this important task with serious attention to scholarship, means using accepted methods of research and acknowledging the achievements of other researchers (scholars) by appropriately citing and referencing their work in your work. |
